Our consumer society and its environmental impacts

We live in a consumer society and a culture that encourages us to buy more than we need. Almost everything we buy takes energy to produce, which is usually sourced from fossil fuels (electricity, gas, coal, oil), so our purchases also contain ‘embedded carbon’.  If an item is thrown away and sent to landfill or an incinerator, this contributes to other greenhouse gas emissions, such as methane.

Instead of buying new things, adopt the sustainability principles of Refuse & reduce, Reuse & share, Repair, & repurpose, Rot and Recycle & refill.
